Update – Important Date Reminders

Hope everyone had a fantastic vacation!  This week  back we have our Artist in Resident, Randy Armstrong teaching students about West African Drumming.  5M will be having time with him each day so that we’ll be ready for the concert on Friday, May 4th, at 6:30 pm. Please mark this time in your calendar – as the students are the performers and we hope they all can make it.  Families are welcome to watch the performance in the gymnasium.

The other important dates are the week of May 21 – 25.  This is our SAS-AIR testing week where it would be very helpful if students were on time and not pulled for Dr. appointments etc.

Update

Coming off a vacation week and having a snow day can prove challenging to get into the swing of things. However, we’ve been quite busy in 5M. Here’s a break down of what we’ve been up to…

Reading: we started fantasy book groups and are practicing making inferences based upon specific evidence from the text.

Writing: we just wrapped up a narrative writing piece (scores coming home next week) and are moving into informational writing.

Math: this week we worked  on coordinate graphing (connected to a robotics challenge) while also continuing to work on fifth grade fraction skills. Students just started adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions with unlike denominators.

Science: Project Lead the Way-Robotics is in full swing. Students are designing a hazardous waste site and creating s robot that can remotely remove waste.

Social Studies: Westward Expansion is our next area of focus. This week students learned all about Lewis and Clark’s Expedition.

Spelling:  kids worked on kw and k sounds. Some students could benefit from practicing these vocabulary lists more for homework.

We hope families can make it to the Margarita’s Artist in Residence fundraiser this Sunday!

As always if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Seizing the Day

What an amazing day we had today! When it hits 75 degrees in February, you just have to be outside.

Today kids solved fraction problems around the playground (example : use chalk to draw a 1 and 1/2 foot square. What is it’s area? Can you create a new rectangle with the same area but different dimensions? Create a fraction, decimal, percent equivalent for the number of free throws you made out of five shots taken) .

In addition to having math class outside, students tested their Project Lead the Way robot creations on the four square court. Ask your child the criteria and constraints of this challenge.

Valentine’s Day

Fifth grade does not have a Valentine’s Day Party. Students may bring in valentines if they want, but if they do so I would like it to be for the whole class. This is optional and they can hand them out during snack.

Disinfectant Wipes

If anyone can donate more disinfectant wipes that would be so appreciated. With the intense germ season upon us, I have been trying to wipe classroom surfaces as much as possible. We have only one container of wipes recently donated. Thank you for anyone that can send them in.
