Month: September 2017
Homework Tonight
Unfortunately we got so busy today I was unable to give out debate parts. All students have for homework tonight is to read 20 minutes and practice for spelling test (word search).
Curriculum Night Tomorrow
Don’t forget to come visit and hear about all the learning that will take place this year. Thursday – 6:45 pm start in 5M classroom. At 7:00pm the whole grade will meet in Mrs. Crowley’s class.
Bringing the Revolution to Life
Check out these pictures of the students marching to “Yankee Doodle” and reenacting the Battle of Bunkerhill. We are gearing up for our trip to the Freedom Trail where we get to reenact the tea debate at the Old South Meetinghouse and have costume guided revolutionaries lead us to famous landmarks in Boston.
Balancing Narration and Dialogue
Working in pairs, students practiced setting the scene of a story, correctly punctuating dialogue with multiple speakers, and using showing details. The creative stories were quite entertaining and it was great to see kids collaborate and bounce ideas off of each other.
This Week….
Just a few learning goals this week….
Standard Algorithm for Multiplication (a few students are already solid with this and will be given some challenge opportunities connected to area calculations)
Spelling Lists – words with short a and short e’s (students must select a minimum of 10 words but can challenge themselves with up to 25 words)
Opinion Writing Pre-assessment – students could brainstorm topics with families at home to prepare for this

Comparing and Contrasting Characters
We’ve been comparing and contrasting characters in our class read aloud and independent books.
Interactive Read Aloud:
It is quite obvious how Penn Webb and John “Crash” Coogan are different from each other. Students – Do you think the two both being great runners will cause conflict later in the book?
“No taxation without representation!”
How would you feel if you had to pay a tax for wearing shorts or going the bathroom? Today students got a sense of what it was like to be a colonists, being taxed after the French and Indian War. Students actively participated in a Revolutionary War time period simulation.
